Catalyzing Youth Engagement in Active Citizenship and Governance in Aswan, Egypt

A local NGO opens a number of boys’ youth centers in Aswan to girls. The chief objectives of the initiative:

  • To empower girls’ full participation in community institutions and public affairs,
  • To engage boys and girls together and equally in civic education, active citizenship and the future democratic governance of  community youth centers,
  • To foster women’s active participation in the current leadership and governance of youth centers.

In achieving its objectives, the project;  a) invigorates the youth centers and community life (expands the centers’ activities, increases and activates boys’ and girls’ membership, and fosters women’s active engagement with men in decision-making on community affairs) and  b) catalyzes expanded and more active participation by boys, girls, and women in community affairs, active citizenship, and the democratic practices of governance.

Catalyzing Business Citizenship among SMEs in al-Minia, Egypt

A local NGO promotes the labor rights of girls working in small workshops and medium factories in al-Minia to improve working conditions and worker safety.  The chief objectives of the initiative:

  • To improve working conditions for girls in local factories and workshops,
  • To educate girls, their families, and employers on the rights of female workers,
  • To engage other NGOs and local government in improving working conditions and employment benefits and to fulfill the labor rights of workers.

In achieving its objectives, the project:  a) raises awareness and educates girl laborers, their families, employers, local government agencies, and other local NGOs to the Egyptian labor law and rights of workers in workshops and factories; and  b) establishes a code of ethics for employers and their workers and demonstrates the benefits to employers of respecting worker rights.
