Child Protection

The Egyptian labor force includes a large number of working children under 18 years old. Most children work out of necessity.  While work can provide benefits, these children are frequently exposed to health and safety hazards. Education and the pursuit of a normal childhood is difficult or impossible under these circumstances. These realities have prompted the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to incorporate child protection as an integral component of all its projects. Methods include:

  •   Issuing a Position Paper on Child Rights-based Approach.
  •   Instituting mechanisms to minimize the exploitation of children through work.
  •   Promoting learning to improve the condition of working children.
  •   Working with NGOs involved in the field of child protection.
