'Manara' - Justice and Equality for Eastern Desert Bedouin Citizens Project (JEEP)
‘Manara’- (Lighthouse in Arabic) is a human rights project aimed at empowering 4,500 Bedouin citizens of the Eastern Desert Governorates of Aswan and the Red Sea to attain their legal and political rights. It is a significant step in advancing the quality of life of these marginalized and long neglected groups, particularly women and children.
'Manara' seeks to build the capacity of the local civil society groups (formal and informal); raise the civic, legal & political awareness of the local communities; and provide direct legal support & services to Bedouin citizens, particularly women, in issuing their official registration papers in order to secure their rights. In addition, the project will indirectly benefit a minimum of 15% of the total Eastern Desert population, estimated at 1.5 million Bedouins, in improving the quality of their life.
In pursuit of justice and equality and aiming at the integration of the Eastern Desert Bedouins as equal citizens within the Egyptian society, the Center of Egyptian Family Development (CEFD), a non-governmental rights-based civil society organization (CSO), will implement the project, sponsored by the Regional Human Rights and Peace-building Fund (RHRPF).
