Education Centre for African Refugee Children in Ain Shams

The project’s goal is to offer education, health, economic and social empowerment to the marginalized Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers living in Ain Shams-Cairo pending their return to Sudan or resettlement to 3rd countries. SCDP Education Centre is a multi-faceted program offering kindergarten and primary education to at least 395 children, adult education to 88 adults in the evenings; and its facilities are used by Refuge Egypt (www.refuge-egypt.org) in the evenings to train about 199 youths under its youth project that aims at keeping youth busy and rehabilitating gang members (especially the notorious “Outlaws”). In addition, Refuge Egypt uses SCDP facilities as a Well-baby clinic for an estimated 8-10 newly born children and their mothers per week. During these clinic visits, mothers in Ain shams and surrounding suburbs are able to have the weight, nutrition and growth of their children monitored and any problems attended to, in addition to receiving free health education on child nutrition, FGM and immunization. They also receive nutritionally balanced food packs. Members also use the premises to meet and exchange information on ways to engage in income-generating activities.
