Sustainable Desert Communities in the Oases

As desert reclamation and resettlement policies in Egypt are set to continue, there is an urgent need for models that prepare desert communities for climate change, water scarcity and food shortages. Accordingly, the project overall goal is to promote sustainable water management and community development in the oasis. Project activities are participatory in nature aiming at assisting the Farmers Association in continuing their successful work of community-based development in the oasis and to become a self-sustained body that continues to generate sustainable local development.

Throughout this project, the Canada Fund aims to implement two innovative pilot models projects:

  • One pilot project is to foster sustainable irrigation based on sprinkler systems through an on-field trial project;
  • The second pilot project is for the use of solar energy and hybrid energy systems for household use in the oasis.
